Today We Look Horizontal
Today we look horizontal
We look horizontal at each other
We see black and white and shades of brown
We see rich and poor
We see male and female
We see big and small
We see young and old
We see American and non-American and want-to-be American and don’t want to be American anymore
We look horizontal.
Today we look horizontal
We see politicians with whom we agree and those with whom we do not
We see popular culture figures of whom we are proud and those of whom we are not, we see sports figures flexing their voice of conscience and those of their shame, we see those marching in the streets, displaying their signs, shouting their protest for and against, and …
We see those who are lookie lieus and those who for whatever reason stand silent by
We see people banding together for and those who are hanging together against
We look horizontal.
Today we look horizontal
Wondering about the heart and soul of the other while struggling to understand my own
Knowing that the way of the past will not work but wondering what the specifics of the way of the future might be
We look horizontal.
Today we look horizontal
And as we do we look for my friend, a person with whom I agree, who believes as I believe and is willing to act like I will act, a person who is passionate, willing to take their stand for the right as they believe it to be.
But, as I stand tall I risk looking down at the one I consider less. Isn’t that what the infamous police office did to George Floyd? Isn’t it easy to do to another?
It seems so unconsciously easy to judge another, condemn another, one- up another, damn another, demean another.
We become polarized. We look horizontal.
But when will we look vertical?
Defining a vision…Developing a plan
Moving toward a higher calling…Based on lofty goals…Noble ideals
Including the whole of our nation…Not just the 5/5 against the 3/5s
Based on a love that is pure because it comes from One who is holy
Based on the love of the One who gave his all.
God so loved the world (Kosmos, all creation)
“All are created equal and endowed by their Creator…”
Today we look horizontal but if we are going to survive and grow and become and flourish we must look vertical as individuals and as a whole
Gracious God
Today we look horizontal and see a world that must be changed…
Empower us to look vertical toward an ideal toward which all people can rise
To a hope that will drive us all to create a new reality
